Cupra key replacement in Tenerife — from a dead fob battery to a lost-all-keys.

At Otypro in Tenerife, I cut and program Cupra keys at your vehicle — starting prices from €60 for the simplest keys, KESSY keyless keys from €200. All-keys-lost starts at €200 for most flip keys, or from €200 for a keyless push-button key — on the newest platforms I confirm first that it can be done on-site. A second key made the same visit costs less than coming back for it later — I put that number in your written quote. A dead fob is often a €3.11 battery you can DIY.

  • Pay after it works

A lot of Cupra calls start as “the remote stopped working” — and often it’s just the coin-cell battery, so I’ll tell you straight when it’s a €3.11 fix you can do yourself, and handle it on-site when it’s actually a programming or lost-key job. Formentor, León, Ateca, Born, Terramar, Tavascan and the older SEAT-badged León Cupra. Most Cupras sit on the newest VW-group platforms, so text me the year first. If you’ve lost every Cupra key, that’s the lost-car-keys job.

Which Cupra key is yours?

Pick your Cupra key, see your price.

Almost every Cupra has a flip key, and many add KESSY keyless — year and trim decide which.

Not sure? Text me a photo of your key — I'll identify it.

Cupra pricing

How much does a Cupra key cost in Tenerife?

At Otypro in Tenerife, I cut and program Cupra car keys on-site — starting prices from €60, keyless keys from €200, all-keys-lost from €200.

Open-ended starting prices. Flip-key Cupras sit in the middle; KESSY keyless keys sit higher because the key hardware costs more; the newest models I quote once you text the year and model. A key battery you can do yourself for about €3.11.

Lost all keys (AKL)

All-keys-lost replacement

from €200 transponder

from €200 keyless (KESSY)

All-keys-lost starts at €200 for most flip keys, or from €200 for a keyless push-button key. A second key made the same visit costs less than coming back for it later — I put that number in your written quote. A brand-new Cupra key, cut and programmed where the car is parked, after I verify ownership. On the newer VW-group platforms Cupra uses, I confirm by text first that it can be done on-site; where it can, set against a dealer parts-order, a tow, and a workshop appointment, it is a single on-site visit. Details on the lost-keys page.

Fob programming / battery

BYO fob or supply + program

from €60 you bring it

from €60 I supply

Bring a reputable aftermarket key for your Cupra and it’s labour-only at €60; or I supply a basic remote where one fits — same from €60 floor. A KESSY keyless key is a pricier part (spare pricing above), not a €60 basic-fob job. A plain battery swap isn’t worth a service call — do it yourself for ~€3.11 (see above). The most-Googled Cupra key problem

What battery does your Cupra key take, and what do you do when it dies?

Cupra key fob battery replacement in Tenerife is what most Cupra owners are searching for when the remote quits — so let’s get you sorted whether or not you ever need to call me. A dead coin cell is a €3.11 fix you can do where you’re parked. Here’s the honest version.

Which battery does it take?

Cupra flip keys and KESSY keyless keys from 2018 on (Ateca, León, Formentor, Terramar) usually take a CR2032. The keys of the electric Born and Tavascan usually take a CR2032 as well. Don’t guess — pop the key open and read the number printed on the old battery, then match it. Any ferretería, supermarket, or pharmacy has it for a few euros.

The mistake that "kills" a good fob

The single most common reason a Cupra key stops working right after a battery swap is the new battery going in upside down. Before you pull the old one, note which way the plus (+) side faces. Your key also carries a mechanical blade — the flip-out blade, or on some keys a small blade that slides out — which unlocks the driver’s door by hand if the remote won’t talk to the car (on some models the lock hides under a small cap on the door handle). A battery swap never needs reprogramming.

Stuck with a dead fob? A keyless Cupra still starts.

This is the one worth knowing before you’re stuck in a dark car park late at night. Even with a completely dead key battery, the car can still recognise the key up close:

1

Get in (use the mechanical key blade to unlock the driver’s door by hand if the remote won’t respond).

2

Press and hold the brake pedal.

3

Hold the key right against the marked emergency spot, then press START. Your owner’s manual shows the exact spot — on most models it’s on the steering column.

Coin cells drain faster in heat, so a fob that's felt weak for a while often gives up after a hot Tenerife afternoon in a parked car. If a fresh, correctly-seated battery still doesn't fix it, it's a programming or hardware problem — and that's where I come in, on-site, the same visit. More on fob programming →

The Cupra lineup

Cupra models I cut and program.

Cupra keys are VW-group flip keys, with KESSY keyless entry and push-button start on many trims; the electric Born and Tavascan sit on the separate MEB platform. Year and trim decide which, so text me both — or a photo of your existing key — for an exact quote.

Formentor

SUV · 2020+

Cupra’s first model of its own, on the MQB-Evo platform. Flip key, with KESSY keyless on many trims; petrol and plug-in hybrid versions share the same key family. Recent platform — text me the year and model; I confirm before I drive over whether it can be done on-site.

León

Hatch / Sportstourer · 2020+

The Cupra León shares its platform and key family with the 2020+ SEAT León (MQB-Evo). Flip key, KESSY keyless on many trims, e-Hybrid included. Text me the year and trim first — I confirm before I drive over whether it can be done on-site.

Born

Electric hatch · 2021+

Cupra’s electric hatch, built in Germany and sold in Spain since late 2021. It’s on the VW-group MEB electric platform, and the key programming is different from the petrol cars. Text me the year first — I confirm before I drive over whether it can be done on-site.

Ateca

SUV · 2018+

The Cupra Ateca was the first Cupra-badged car. It’s on the MQB platform shared with the SEAT Ateca — flip key, KESSY keyless on many trims. A familiar platform; send me the year and I’ll confirm the key and the quote.

Terramar + Tavascan

SUV · 2024+

The newest Cupras: the Terramar (petrol and plug-in hybrid, MQB-Evo) and the electric Tavascan (MEB). Both very recent — text me the year and model and I confirm before I drive over whether it can be done on-site.

SEAT León Cupra + Ibiza Cupra

Hatch / estate · before 2020

Before Cupra became its own brand in 2018, the name sat on SEATs sold in Spain — León Cupra (1P and 5F), León Cupra R, Ibiza Cupra. They use the SEAT flip key of their year, with KESSY keyless on some 5F cars. All in scope.

Older or rarer — a León ST Cupra, a Cupra R, an early Ibiza Cupra? Still in scope. Cupra and SEAT share platforms and immobiliser tech with Volkswagen, Audi and Škoda, so the blanks and programming are familiar. Text the year and model.

Cupra key questions, answered.

These are Cupra-specific — for general service, pricing, and how-it-works questions, see the dedicated spare, lost-keys, and fob pages, or the full FAQ page.

What battery does my Cupra key fob take?

Most Cupra keys (Ateca, León, Formentor, Terramar) use a CR2032 coin cell, and the Born and Tavascan keys usually do too. The safest move: pop the key open, read the number printed on the old battery, and match it. One tip that saves a lot of grief — the most common reason a Cupra key stops working right after a battery swap is the new battery going in upside down, so note which way the plus (+) side faces before you pull the old one. It’s a €3 part at any ferretería or supermarket; no reprogramming needed for a battery swap.

My Cupra fob battery is dead — how do I start the car?

A keyless Cupra will still start with a totally dead key battery. Press the brake, hold the key right against the marked emergency spot — your owner’s manual shows it; on most models it’s on the steering column — and press START. The car reads the chip at close range even when the remote won’t work. The mechanical key blade unlocks the driver’s door by hand. If a fresh, correctly-seated battery still doesn’t bring the remote back, that’s a programming or hardware issue — text me and I’ll sort it on-site where the platform allows.

How much does a Cupra key replacement cost in Tenerife?

Spare or extra key starts at €60 for a transponder key (rare on a Cupra), from €120 for a flip key, and from €200 for a KESSY keyless key, if I supply. Less if you bring your own reputable aftermarket key. All-keys-lost starts at €200 for most flip keys, or from €200 for a keyless push-button key. A second key made the same visit costs less than coming back for it later — I put that number in your written quote. Fob programming on its own starts at €60. Flip-key Cupras sit in the middle; KESSY keyless keys (many Formentor, León and Terramar) sit higher because the key hardware costs more, and on the newest platforms I confirm what can be done on-site before quoting. A key battery swap you can do yourself for about €3.11.

Do you program keyless (KESSY) Cupra all-keys-lost on-site?

It depends on the model, and I’d rather tell you that up front. The Cupra Ateca and the older SEAT-badged León Cupra are on the MQB platform — there I have the tools to read the immobiliser and program a new key at your vehicle, usually in one trip, no tow, no dealer queue. The Formentor, the 2020+ León and the Terramar are on MQB-Evo, and the Born and Tavascan on the electric MEB platform — these use newer, tighter immobiliser systems. Text me the year and model — I confirm before I drive over whether it can be done on-site.

Do you do older Cupras — the Ateca, or a SEAT-badged León Cupra or Ibiza Cupra?

Yes. The Cupra Ateca (2018+) and the SEAT-badged León Cupra and Ibiza Cupra use VW-group flip keys, with KESSY keyless on some. SEAT and Cupra share immobiliser tech with Volkswagen, Audi and Škoda, so the blanks and programming are familiar territory for me. A worn flip key is often a shell swap with your existing chip and board moved over — cheaper than a new key. Text me the year and model and I’ll confirm the key and the quote.

My Cupra fob battery is new but the remote still won’t work — what now?

Three usual causes. First, the new battery is in upside down or is a weak off-brand — re-seat it the same way the old one sat and try a fresh name-brand cell. Second, the remote lost its sync or the board inside is damaged (water, a hard drop) — that needs reprogramming or a new key. Third, it was never the key — it’s a receiver or wiring issue on the car. I can tell which it is on-site and fix the programming side the same visit where the platform allows. Text me the year/model and what happened right before it quit.

Can you make a Cupra key if I have no key at all?

On most MQB-platform Cupras, yes — that’s the all-keys-lost (AKL) job. I first confirm the model and year, because the Formentor, the 2020+ León, the Terramar, the Born and the Tavascan are newer platforms and I check whether they can be done on-site before I drive over. Where it can, I cut a fresh blade and program a new key into your Cupra’s immobiliser right at your vehicle in Tenerife, no tow to the dealer. Before I start I verify ownership — photo ID matched to your registration papers in your name — and if the documents are locked in the car, I run the lockout first so you can pull them.
