Short answer for the people scrolling fast: at Otypro in Tenerife, a chip or fob car key done mobile starts at €60 . All-keys-lost starts at €200 for most transponder and remote-head keys, or from €200 for a push-to-start smart key. A second key made the same visit costs less than coming back for it later — I put that number in your written quote. Dealer route on the same job is typically from €200 – €684 plus a tow if your car won’t start. Text me your year and make and I’ll confirm your exact price before I head out.

Long answer: the price depends on five things — service type, key technology, vehicle year, complexity of the immobilizer, and whether you supply the part or I do. Here’s the full picture so you walk into the quote already knowing what’s fair.

TL;DR · open-ended floors

The four services, four floors.

Tenerife car key starting prices at Otypro — mobile, on-site, in euros.
Service Starting price (EUR)
Spare / extra key — transponder from €60
Spare / extra key — remote-head / flip from €120
Spare / extra key — Smart Key (proximity fob) from €200
Lost all keys (AKL) — transponder / remote-head, brand-new key from €200
Lost all keys (AKL) — push-to-start Smart Key from €200
Key fob programming (you bring the fob or I supply) from €60
Car lockout — keys locked inside from €56

A spare needs a working key to copy from. All-keys-lost requires ownership verification — government photo ID matched to the vehicle papers (permiso de circulación) or proof of insurance in your name. A second key made the same visit costs less than coming back for it later — I put that number in your written quote. Fob programming is BYO-friendly (Amazon / AliExpress fobs welcome at the floor). Car lockout is non-destructive — no broken windows.

Why is the difference betwefrom €60 and from €200?

Same locksmith, same tools, same truck (well — same sedan, in my case). The price gap comes from what the job actually involves. Here are the five levers that move every quote.

1

Service type

Lockout is a 5-10 minute mechanical entry — no parts. AKL is a 1-3 hour job with ownership verification, key cutting from scratch, and immobilizer programming. The price spread tracks the work spread.

2

Key technology

A transponder key (metal blade with a chip in the head) is ~from €60. A Smart Key (proximity fob with push-to-start) is ~from €200. The Smart Key has more hardware, more programming steps, and stricter security.

3

Vehicle year + immobilizer generation

A 2008 Corolla uses an older transponder system that programs in 5 minutes. A 2022 RAV4 uses a newer-generation immobilizer that requires more sophisticated dealer-level access. Same brand, very different procedures. Year and generation matter more than make.

4

Who supplies the fob

BYO fob (from Amazon, AliExpress, an online OEM supplier) at €60 is the cheapest path for fob programming. If I supply the fob, the part cost is included in the €60 floor. Both are honest options — depends on whether you want to do the parts hunt yourself.

5

Brand-specific complexity

Some vehicles need extra access steps. 2018+ Jeep Wrangler JL carries an extra factory security layer that adds time to every key job. Some 2022+ Toyota models need higher-tier programming. A few late-2010s, newest and electric BMW/MINI models I confirm by text before quoting. None of this is “surprise on arrival” — I tell you up front before sending the quote. See the brand pages (Toyota, Honda, Ford, Jeep) for the model-by-model breakdown.

“A car key isn’t a key anymore — it’s a programmed credential paired to your vehicle. The price reflects the dealer-level access and the time, not the metal.”

What are you actually paying for?

People sometimes ask why a “car key” is hundreds of dollars when their house key is €2.49. Here’s the honest breakdown of what’s inside that floor price.

  1. The physical key or fob. An OEM-quality blank, transponder chip, or full Smart Key fob.
  2. Cutting labour and equipment. Mechanical edge-cut for older keys, laser-cut (sidewinder) for high-security keys on many 2010+ vehicles. The cutting machines aren’t cheap, and the cuts have to be accurate to spec.
  3. Programming labour and dealer-level access. The hardware and software that let me speak to your vehicle’s immobilizer as the manufacturer expects. The single biggest investment in this trade.
  4. Travel time. Mobile means I drive to you — same time and fuel as any service call. Built into the floor, not surcharged.
  5. Insurance, business registration, and accountability.

When is the dealer still the right call?

I’d rather lose a job to a dealer than mishandle it. Two honest cases where the dealer wins:

  • →Vehicle is under factory warranty and the dealer absorbs the key cost as part of a warranty repair. Free is free.
  • →Rare or first-year model where the immobilizer architecture is too new for aftermarket access. Mostly a non-issue — but for some 2024-2026 vehicles the dealer is the only path. I’ll tell you up front if that’s your situation.

Common questions about car key costs.

What does a car key cost in Tenerife in 2026?

At Otypro in Tenerife, open-ended floors with me: spare key from €60 (transponder) or from €200 (Smart Key proximity fob), fob programming from €60 whether you bring the fob or I supply one, car lockout from €56. All-keys-lost starts at €200 for most transponder and remote-head keys, or from €200 for a push-to-start smart key. A second key made the same visit costs less than coming back for it later — I put that number in your written quote. Exact price varies with year, make, model, and key complexity — text me your year and make to confirm yours before I dispatch.

Why are car keys so expensive now compared to 20 years ago?

Three reasons. (1) Most vehicle keys since the late 1990s — and virtually all since Spain’s 2007 immobilizer mandate — contain a transponder chip; that’s hardware cost on most keys. (2) Programming requires dealer-level access tools, software licences renewed annually, and time on each job. (3) Lost-all-keys jobs require ownership verification before I cut a key. The labour and tooling investment is real — fair pricing reflects that, not the €12 metal key of 2001.
